Reusing of plastic is harmful due to a process known as leaching - leaking of harmful chemicals, as a result of normal wear and tear due to reuse of such bottles. The chemical released depends on the plastic type. Not all plastic types are harmful though. Plastic containers are generally numbered from #1 to #7 and those numbered 2, 4, 5 are generally considered safe.
In the end, it’s really best to avoid using all plastics if you’re able. But at the very least:
Avoid recycling symbols 3, 6, and 7. While Number 1 is considered safe, it is also best to avoid this plastic.Look for symbols 2, 4, and 5, as these plastics are considered to be safest. These are the plastics to look for in terms of human and animal consumption."
Plastic packaging, especially when you touch the bottle with your mouth is a bed of bacteria, which multiply especially during the summer and high temperatures. Every time again when you use the bottle the bacteria are multiplying.
Also, it is unwise the bottle from which you are drinking water to wash it with detergent, because the part that you are touching with the mouth you can't rinse the chemicals from it.
It would be safest to use the bottle of water or juice only once, because they also are intended for single use. And always, if you have an opportunity, try to drink from glass rather than directly from the bottle .
